NATIVE SONS SERIES | 2019
The 9-piece, 3-dimensional portrait series was a commissioned project inspired by the Black Girl Magic series, but geared toward illustrating the lives of 9 Black men on their academic journeys. The collector shared each man’s story and his pseudonym, which the artist used to create unique corresponding images. She also paired a tactile element with every piece to add depth, such as sewing hair accessories to the canvas, using felt as hair and a hat, beads for jewelry, and tinted raised glue for eyewear.
