1 PEOPLE: ERADICATING LABELS + NURTURING MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT
BROOKLYN, NY | 2018
The “One People” mural, which was designed by lead muralist Christopher Cardinale, is a public art partnership between the New York Mural Arts Program (NYCMAP), MS354, and KIPP AMP Charter School, in collaboration with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Janel Young was a painting assistant on Christopher’s core team, as well as his studio manager and production assistant on the installation team for this nine-month project.
The intricate design features two walls: one focusing on “each one teach one” - a phrase encouraging mental health education; and the second one emphasizing “support,” shown through building positive words with bricks, while removing negative words with a playful wizard and vacuum.
The 2,000 square foot painting is acrylic on polytab (or parachute paper), installed with nova-gel onto the side of Brooklyn’s school, MS354. This would be the first of several projects Young worked on as an NYCMAP artist.
