HEROES ON THE HORIZON | 2021
Walnut Capital of Bakery Square (BKSQ) Pittsburgh commissioned Janel Young as their inaugural artist in the Community Public Art Program in Larimer. As part of the project, Young led a residency program with local schools, Pittsburgh Lincoln and Urban Academy, in the area. Young’s design was solely influenced by her work with the 2nd, 4th and 5th grade students, and their answers to the prompt: “What are the things you love in your community? And what powers would you use to protect those things if you were a superhero?”
Heroes on the Horizon is the first 3-D mural under JY Originals’ belt, which includes vinyl, individually-painted alumalite (metal) pieces and LED lighting, making up two 10x16 foot panels outdoor at The Galley in Bakery Square. One panel reads “ONE COMMUNITY” in geometric letters, with “UNITY” raised and emphasized with light. The other panel features an anonymous community superhero facing the horizon with a cape that displays their superpowers.
